Hi FarmBot team and community,
I’d like to propose that FarmBot consider officially supporting Home Assistant integration , and share an open-source project we’ve already been developing to help make this possible.
As someone who enjoys working with open-source technology, home automation and electronics, I’ve always thought FarmBot and Home Assistant would make an excellent combination.
FarmBot already provides a powerful platform for automated gardening, while Home Assistant offers an incredibly flexible environment for monitoring, automation and integrating different systems.
It seems like a natural fit to bring the two together.
The Home Assistant integration project
Rather than waiting for official support, I have been developing a custom Home Assistant integration for FarmBot.
The objective is to make FarmBot accessible directly through Home Assistant, allowing users to incorporate their FarmBot into their existing smart home and garden automation systems.
The project is actively being developed, with a focus on:
- Bringing FarmBot’s operational information into Home Assistant as entities.
- Providing FarmBot monitoring and control through Home Assistant dashboards.
- Making FarmBot functionality accessible to Home Assistant automations.
- Creating opportunities to integrate external weather stations, environmental sensors and other smart gardening equipment.
- Following Home Assistant’s integration standards to improve compatibility and maintainability.
I am continuing to refine the integration, including its configuration, entities and compliance with Home Assistant’s development and validation requirements.
The project is open source, so other users and developers are welcome to review the code, contribute improvements or help test it.
Why official Home Assistant integration would be valuable
Home Assistant already supports an enormous range of devices and automation platforms, and I believe FarmBot could benefit significantly from being part of that ecosystem.
For example, imagine being able to:
- Automatically adjust FarmBot watering routines using rainfall measurements from a local weather station.
- Monitor FarmBot alongside soil moisture, temperature, humidity and other environmental sensors.
- Receive Home Assistant notifications when FarmBot encounters errors or requires attention.
- Incorporate FarmBot into broader garden automation routines.
- Access FarmBot controls and status information from the same dashboard used to manage the rest of your home.
Some of these possibilities depend on the available FarmBot API functionality and further integration development, but they demonstrate what closer collaboration between the two platforms could achieve.
Importantly, I’m not proposing that Home Assistant replace the existing FarmBot web application . FarmBot’s own interface is designed specifically for controlling and managing the machine, and that should remain its primary management platform.
Home Assistant would complement it, providing another way to monitor FarmBot and integrate it with other systems.
My feature request to the FarmBot developers
What I’d really like to see is the FarmBot team actively consider official Home Assistant integration as part of FarmBot’s development roadmap .
Ideally, this could involve:
- Recognising Home Assistant integration as a useful feature for FarmBot users.
- Working with the community to establish a reliable and documented integration.
- Supporting the API functionality needed for monitoring, controls and automation.
- Considering whether an existing community project, such as ours, could provide a starting point for an officially supported integration.
- Helping ensure compatibility as FarmBot’s software and APIs evolve.
I understand that the FarmBot development team has its own priorities and limited development resources. I’m certainly not expecting the team to take over an external project overnight.
However, I think there’s an excellent opportunity for collaboration, particularly given that a community integration is already being developed.
Open source and community collaboration
My integration is available here:

I am happy to continue developing and maintaining it as an open-source project, and would welcome technical feedback, contributions or collaboration from the FarmBot team.
It would be fantastic to see this eventually grow into something officially recognised or supported within the FarmBot ecosystem.
What does the community think?
I’d be interested to hear from other FarmBot users:
- Are you already using Home Assistant?
- Would you use a FarmBot integration if one were available?
- What FarmBot sensors, controls or automation features would you most like to see exposed through Home Assistant?
And specifically to the FarmBot development team :
Would you be open to collaborating on a Home Assistant integration, or considering official support for one in the future?
I believe bringing FarmBot and Home Assistant closer together would benefit both communities and make FarmBot an even more versatile platform for automated gardening.
Cheers from Australia! ![]()
